Aims Implementation Updates

Removal of Public Distinction of Title
Removal of public distinction of title for Clinician Educators has been approved by the University Senate.

Modest Expansion of the Research Faculty
The Research Aims Action Plan Committee endorsed the Dean's desire to modestly expand the faculty, provided that investments in faculty development and critical infrastructure are ongoing.

Academic Affairs
As the first step in addressing the Academic Affairs recommendations, the Dean has authorized an Appointments and Promotions Working Group to sort out appointment decision rights, streamline the appointment process, and produce an efficient academic affairs operation. This faculty-led group will be chaired by Dr. Halina Brukner, Professor and Vice-Chairman, Department of Medicine, and will receive its charge from the Dean at its first meeting July 2nd. Other members of the Working Group are Eric Beyer, Ed Cook, Mary Harvey (Provost?fs Office), Larry Hill, Nancy Schwartz, Ken Sharigian, Neil Shubin, and Ron Thisted.

Reduction of Mouse Costs
The Aims groups observed that current mouse housing prices are a major problem for investigators using mice and recommended a reduction in per diems. Taking into account all Aims requests for funding, the Division is able to commit $1 million per year in increased subsidies to offset the price decreases. In order to spread the decrease most equitably, effective July 1, 2003, the direct price of mouse per diems were lowered to $.65 per day for federally funded use and $.88 per day for non-federally funded use. The reduction represents an equivalent 18% reduction in total costs for both federally and non-federally funded researchers. In addition, the 35% animal facilities charge was eliminated completely on non-federal per diems, animal purchase, and services for all species.
