The BSD and the Hospitals are major partners in The Chicago Initiative, the University's current campaign to raise $2 billion. Within the Initiative, $550 million is set as the target for Spark Discovery, Illuminate Life the combined BSD/UCH effort. The campaign is the largest ever launched by the University or the Division, and is among the most ambitious efforts underway at several universities or academic medical centers nationwide. At the campaign midpoint, we are ahead of pace with 62% of the goal in hand. Gifts to Spark Discovery, Illuminate Life, $341 million thus far, have supported faculty research, helped to recruit new faculty, provided capital funding for the IRB and the Children's Hospital, renovated laboratories, and funded student aid. Spark Discovery gifts, in fact, account for nearly 38% of University-wide campaign results thus far. Clearly, donors are motivated by the opportunity to advance science and medicine.

One key milestone was the successful conclusion in June of At the Forefront: the Campaign for Children, which raised more than $70 million against a goal of $50 million for the new Comer Children's Hospital, as well as for teaching and research in the Department of Pediatrics. In addition to very generous gifts totaling $42 million from Gary and Francis Comer, Hospitals trustees contributed nearly $8 million. Notably, Department of Pediatrics faculty members made personal gifts totaling more than $250,000.
