Aims Implementation Updates

The New Research Building (NRB)
The Research Aims recommended that BSD upgrade research infrastructure by investing in new space additional to the IRB while simultaneously retiring inefficient space in the Medical Center. In response, the Division presented a financial feasibility study for the NRB, which has been accepted by the University. The necessary debt has been approved in principle, and site acquisition and programming for the NRB has begun. The Division intends to seek approval from the University Board of Trustees early next calendar year. If successful, the estimated completion date for the NRB will be 2008.

Academic Affairs
Dr. Halina Brukner, Chair of the Appointments and Promotions Working Group, presented a set of recommendations for restructuring the postdoctoral fellow and research associate tracks to the Divisional Executive Committee on September 25. The proposals were approved in principle, and implementation will now follow through the Dean's Office. The group has shifted focus to the question of decision rights vesting. The Group expects to complete its work prior to January 1, 2004. Dr. Bruce Gewertz, the Dallas B. Phemister Professor and Chair of the Department of Surgery, has been named Chair of the Tracks and Tenure Working Group. This group has been charged by the Dean to assess the Aims recommendations surrounding tenurable scholarship and the appropriate use of the full-time faculty tracks. The Group expects to complete its work in late Spring 2004

UCPP Strategic Planning
The Executive Committee of the University of Chicago Practice Plan, Chaired by Dr. Fabrizio Michelassi, has begun biweekly meetings aimed at addressing issues of critical concern in the Practice Plan. A major effort has been launched to develop long-term strategy for UCPP while simultaneously addressing critical operational concerns.

Ed Cook, Maryellen Giger, Brian Popko, Nino Ramirez, Marsha Rosner, Harinder Singh, Tobin Sosnick, and Mitch Villereal; ex officio members include Drs.
