Aims Implementation Updates

The New Research Building (NRB)
The business case for the NRB was presented to the BSHCC, which authorized programming to proceed. In February, the case will be presented to the University’s Capital Projects Committee, and if approved, will then be presented to a joint meeting of the Financial Planning and Campus Planning & Facilities Committees of the University of Chicago Board of Trustees on April 8th. The estimated completion date for the NRB, if approved, is 2008.

Academic Affairs
The Appointments and Promotions Working Group, having completed its work on restructuring the postdoctoral fellow/scholar tracks, presented a preliminary set of recommendations regarding the Research Associate track to the Divisional Executive Committee on January 29th. The Working Group will now refine its recommendations and submit for final approval at the February meeting of the same group. The Tracks and Tenure Working Group, Chaired by Dr. Bruce Gewertz, has begun a series of mini-retreats to discuss the current BSD faculty track system, the nature of tenurable scholarship, and how both can be optimized to best meet the current and future needs of BSD. The Group expects to complete its work in late Spring 2004.

UCPP Executive Committee
The Executive Committee of the University of Chicago Practice Plan, chaired by Dr. Fabrizio Michelassi, has created subcommittees in critical Practice Plan functional areas. These groups include Clinical Operations, Program Development, Billing/Collections/Contracting, Compliance, Credentialing, and Malpractice Risk Reduction. The Executive Committee recently announced, through a faculty RFA, a major new initiative in clinical program development. The Division will invest an incremental $10 million, with substantial co-investment from the Hospitals, to build new clinical programs. Interested faculty should contact Carolyn Wilson at cwilson@bsd.uchicago.edu for additional details about the application process.

Education Committee
The Education Committee is Chaired by Dr. Holly Humphrey and includes Drs. Bruce Gewertz, José Quintans, Nancy Schwartz, and Neil Shubin, as well as Ann Schwind and Ken Sharigian. The Committee is focusing its early efforts on the allocation of departmental teaching responsibilities.

Research Advisory Committee
The RAC has been involved in advising the Division on space programming for the NRB, as well as launching a Divisional survey designed to assess programmatic research programs, core facility location and usage, and the quality of BSD research space. The RAC has also been asked to advise the Division on bridge and seed funding, space dollar densities and research faculty salary recovery levels.
