BSD shared research facilities, also known as core facilities, are centralized areas of technology and expertise providing a wide variety of services to support the research efforts of the University. Demonstrated needs of the faculty are the driving force behind new developments in existing facilities and in the development of new facilities. A shared research facility is recognized by the Division as one that provides services on a charge-back basis and provides services to more than one faculty member or department.

Each facility is managed primarily by a Technical Director, providing daily management, scientific expertise, training to new users, and development of new services as the field expands. The TD is supported by a Faculty Director and a Faculty Advisory Committee that provides scientific oversight and champions funding opportunities for the facility.

Divisional support for the facilities includes funding support for purchase of new technologies or development costs for expansion of new services. Funding allocation decisions are made by the Committee on Research Resources (CORR). CORR, comprised of faculty and administrators, periodically reviews the operations of the facilities and reviews new proposals for funding. The BSD Office of Shared Research Facilities (OSRF) provides administrative support to the cores including management/policy development and financial management.
