• Make fundamental discoveries that help us understand how amphibians made their earliest transition to land;
• Translate fundamental discoveries regarding the crystal structure of anthrax toxins to high-throughput screening of promising therapeutics to treat this dread disease;
• Pioneer the incorporation of mathematics into undergraduate and graduate biological sciences education;
• Care for patients in the clinics and Hospitals, teach medical students, residents and clinical fellows and engage in cutting-edge clinical research.

Note also the importance of key interfaces in every example, from the unique interface we share with the broader field sciences, to our interface with Argonne National Laboratory and the University’s Departments of Chemistry and Mathematics, to our important and sustaining interface with the University of Chicago Hospitals and Health System. Our friends and friendships no doubt make us stronger. We will continue to work hard at these and other key interfaces in the future.

Finally, I am pleased to announce that the University Board of Trustees, at its April meetings, approved our plan for the New Research Building, which allows BSD to proceed now with architect selection and completion of final layout and design for the building. The new building, intended to house research programs from the Departments of Medicine and Pediatrics, will be constructed at total estimated cost of $160 million with an estimated size of 330,000 gross square feet. The estimated completion date for the NRB is 2007.
