Over 50 faculty members from the cancer research Center, led by Director Michelle Le Beau, Ph.D., met in late july for a full day Retreat downtown. Dr. Le Beau, other senio cancer leaders, and the Division have thought deeply about ways to revitalize the Cancer Center, and the Retreat was meant to refine the ideas into action plans. I believe this process serves us well as a model for how the Aims process can be extended into focused strategic planning in specific areas of interest. I look forward to working with Dr. Le Beau and the rest of the division's cancer leadership in achieving the aspirations crystallized by the CRC Retreat.
I am also pleased to report two important milestones in relation to the New Research Building. The University has acquired five of the six properties on Site A -our preferred building site immediately west of and adjacent to the Biological Sciences Learning Center -and the final property is under contract. Secondly, the University of Trustees have approved Zimmer Gunsul Frasca as the architectural design firm for the NRB. ZGF has significant experience in designing biomedical research buildings; examples include the Hatfield Clinical Research Center at NIH, the Fred Hutchison Cancer Research Center in Seattle, and the Bunting-Blaustein Buiilding at Johns Hopkins.
We have also kept up the pace in leadership recruitment. Dr. S. Murray Sherman has joined us as Chair of the Department of Neurobiology, Pharmacology and Physiology, and T. Conrad Giliam will soon become the new Chair of the Department of Human Genetics. Internally, Dr. Olaf Schneewind has been appointed Chair of our new Department of Microbiology, Dr. Geoffrey Greene has assumed leadership of the Committee on Cancer Biology, and Dr. Arthur Haney has been named Chair of the University of Chicago Practice Plan Executive Committee.
These and other events have kept our momentum through the summer and we look to more of such in the next quarter.
