The New Research Building (NRB)
Major milestones have been reached during the last quarter. The preferred site for the NRB -immediately west of and adjacent to the Biological Sciences Leanring Center- has been acquired. Five of the 6 private properties on the site have been acquired outright, and the sixth and final property is under contract and awaiting close. The architect for the NBR has been selected and approved by the University of Chicago Board of trustees. Zimmer Gunsul Frasca Partnership has significant experience in designing biomedical research buildings. Examples of their work include the Hatfield Clinical research center at NIH, the Fred Hutchison Cancer Research Center in Seattle, and the Bunting-Blaustein Building at Johns Hopkins. ZGF will partner with the Chicago-area architectural support group Solomon Cordwell Buenz & Associates, which has specific experience in Chicago-area labo ratory construction. Examples of their work include the UIC Medical Research Building, the Life Science at Loyola, and the Research Building at Children's Memorial Hospital.
Animal Resources Center faculty Advisory Committee
An outgrowth of the Research Aims Action Planning process, the ARC Advisory Committee was created and charged to provide a mechanism whereby animal users have a voice in operations, strategy, and deicision-making as well as a means for the ARC to gain faculty review and input. Brian Popko, Ph.D., the Jack Miller Professor and Director of the Peripheral Neuropathy Center in the Department of Neurology, has been named Chair of the new Committee. Additional members include Drs. Beth McNally, John Crispino, Albert Bendelac, Un Jung Kang, Paul Vezina, Nicholas Hatsopoulos, Naoum Isssa, Dan Margolish, and George Langan, and Ken Sharigian and Carol Mathieu.
Academic Affairs
The Tracks and Tenure Working Group, chaired by Dr. Bruce Gewertz, submitted its final report to Dean Madara on July 29. The recommendations were then presented to the Divisional chairs at a Divisional Executive Committee meeting the same day. The Division will now consider ways to solicit broader faculty input on the recommendation as it formulates an implementation plan.
