Opening this winter, the University of Chicago Comer Children's Hospital is dedicated to providing the best health care for children, from newborns to young adults, in a family-focused environment. The 242,000 square-foot, 155-bed, seven-story facility will provide a child-friendly and family-friendly setting for all inpatient children’s health services at the University of Chicago Hospitals, including nationally recognized programs in cardiology, neurology, neonatology, transplantation and other medical and surgical specialties. A ribbon-cutting ceremony took place on January 31, 2005, attended by Mrs. Rod Blagojevich, Senator Barack Obama, Gary and Francie Comer.
On December 7, 2004, writer and humorist Garrison Keillor related humorous stories on childhood and provided insights on the election results at Rockefeller Memorial Chapel in honor of the opening of the University of Chicago Comer Children's Hospital.
