
Emil Coccaro, M.D., was appointed Chairman of the Department of Psychiatry, effective November 1, 2004. Prior to this appointment, Dr. Coccaro served the University as Professor in the Department of Psychiatry as well as Director of Clinical Neuroscience and Psycho-pharmacology.
Dr. Coccaro received his B.S. in Biology magna cum laude (with honors in Chemistry) from Fordham Collegein 1975, followed by his M.D. from the New York University School of Medicine in 1979. After an internship in Internal Medicine at the University of Cincinnati and a residency in General Psychiatry at the Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City, he joined the faculty of the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in 1983. In 1989 he founded the Clinical Neuroscience Research Unit and became Associate Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the MCP Hahnemann School of Medicine and Full Professor in 1995. In 1999, he joined the University of Chicago faculty as Professor of Psychiatry where he founded the Clinical Neuroscience and Psychopharmacology Research Unit.
Dr. Coccaro’s research interests focus on the neuropharmacologic and genetic mechanisms in mood, anxiety and personality disorders. He is among the world’s leading authorities in the neurobiology of suicidal and impulsive aggressive disorders, with a particular interest in intermittent explosive disorder.
Joe G. N. Garcia, M.D., has been appointed Professor and Chairman of the Department of Medicine, effective on or about May 1, 2005. Dr. Garcia will join us from the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where he is currently the Dr. David Marine Professor and Director of the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine in the Department of Medicine.
Dr. Garcia received his B.S. in Biology from the University of Dallas in 1976, followed by his M.D. from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in 1980. He did his internship and residency at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics and a Fellowship in the Division of Pulmonary Diseases at Albany Medical College. He joined the faculty of the University of Texas Health Center as an Assistant Professor of Medicine in 1985, followed by an appointment as Associate Professor of Medicine, Physiology and Biophysics at the Indiana University School of Medicine in 1988. After becoming full Professor in 1992 and later Dr. Calvin H. English Professor of Medicine in 1995, he joined the Hopkins faculty in 1998. Dr. Garcia’s research program studies endothelial cytoskeletal regulation of thepulmonary microvascular endothelial barrier with a focus on the signaling events regulating barrier function of the endothelial cell monolayers. This work has resulted in over 200 peer-reviewed publications, numerous book chapters, and funding from NIH for several major programmatic efforts directed by Dr. Garcia.
