Reaching over $467 million this fall, the Spark Discovery, Illuminate Life campaign is instrumental in supporting research and discoveries in all aspects of science and medicine.

Two longtime faculty members recently made generous gifts. Michael Simon, M.D., his wife Barbara, daughter Susan Simon Kalt, LAB ’86, MD ’96, and son-in-law David Kalt have committed to establishing a professorship in the Section of Orthopedic Surgery. Robert Haselkorn, Ph.D., and his wife Margot have established a visiting lectureship in Molecular Genetics and Cell Biology.

Another significant gift was made by the Julius N. Frankel Foundation to support neuroscience. Since its establishment in 1982, the Frankel Foundation has given almost $8 million to fund research at the University of Chicago. This latest gift of $1 million will help fund the recruitment, new laboratory, and research of two investigators who study the cerebral cortex.

In October, we broke ground for the Center for Biomedical Discovery and celebrated with a Discovery and Impact dinner at which more than 100 friends and faculty heard about our programs in cancer, metastasis, and molecular pediatrics.

In November, faculty members T. Conrad Gilliam, Ph.D., Steve Goldstein, M.D., Ph.D., and Neil Shubin, Ph.D., traveled to Southern California and brought Discovery and Impact presentations to more than 60 guests. These evenings were hosted by University of Chicago Trustee Kathryn Gould and her husband, George, in Del Mar, and by Richard Baum, M.D ’52, and his wife, Jan, in Los Angeles.

Looking ahead, Discovery and Impact programs will be hosted this spring by University of Chicago Trustee Tom Pritzker and his wife, Margot, and University of Chicago Hospitals Trustee Deborah Bricker. Both events will be held in downtown Chicago.
