UCHPP Spotlight On... GI Oncology

In August 2005, the GI Oncology program received start-up funding through the Practice Plan's Dean's Initiative. The program was the 7th to receive such funding, and at nearly $2 million is one of the largest awards to date. Investment in this program reinforces the University of Chicago's traditional strengths in Gastroenterology and Oncology as evidenced by being ranked 6th and 7th respectively in the 2005 “US News and World Report” Honor Roll rankings.

Feature storyThe program is an interdepartmental effort between General Surgery, Hematology/Oncology and Gastroenterology. According to Mitch Posner, M.D., Professor and Section Chief of General Surgery, the vision of the program is to “create a clinically differentiated program for complex GI cancers by offering superior access, care coordination and leading edge diagnostics and therapeutics.”

The Dean's Initiative provided the vehicle for coordinated investments in faculty, support staff, and capital.

Faculty and administrative leaders involved with the GI Oncology program are meeting regularly to ensure successful implementation and achievement of milestones. The team addresses a variety of topics, including coordination of care protocols, interfacing with other departments, marketing strategies and development of new staff positions.

While interdepartmental interactions have occurred throughout the BSD in the past, the Dean's Initiative has allowed for a more structured process of implementation and coordination. “There are always implementation challenges with these types of interdepartmental programs,” says Dr Posner. “However, I feel that the collaboration and planning between the various sections will create the foundation for the program to successfully achieve its vision.”

The GI Oncology experience will serve as an important example for learning how best to ensure successful implementation of interdepartmental clinical programs in the future.
