On Thursday, March 16th, the 106 members of the 2006 graduating class of the Pritzker School of Medicine crowded into the P117 auditorium, along with many of their fellow students, friends and families to participate in the traditional match day rituals. In honor of St. Patrick’s Day, the students sported t-shirts which read, “Kiss Me I Matched.” Following several school announcements, the students gave a standing ovation when their elected class leaders Catherine Roberts and Lavanya Kondapalli thanked the Pritzker career advisors and staff for their guidance throughout the process.
Promptly at 11:00am, after fourth year student Lauren Whiteside had the distinction of being the last student called and received $1000 from the traditional money bag for her patience, the Pritzker School of Medicine students joined the 15,008 other U.S. medical seniors to open their match envelopes and learn where they will spend their residency training.
Internal medicine continues to be the most popular choice among Pritzker graduates with 22% of the class matched to the categorical programs. General Surgery and Pediatrics followed with 12% of the class matching in those areas. Pritzker students continue to be highly sought after at the most competitive programs throughout the country. In recent years there has been increased interest nationally in the "lifestyle" specialties -those considered to have more reasonable work hours and demands. In addition, General Surgery became one of the most competitive specialties this year,
with all but one position filled. U.S. medical seniors constitute 56% of the 26,715 applicants who participate in the National Resident Matching Program. The Match also includes foreign medical students, graduates of osteopathic schools and physicians who have already graduated. The Match has a very high success rate—93.7 percent of U.S. medical school seniors matched to a first-year residency position. Of those students, 84.6 percent matched to one of their top three program choices.
