Pritzker School of Medicine Rises in National Rankings

The Pritzker School of Medicine was recognized by the latest U.S. News and World Report rankings as the 17th (tied with Vanderbilt University) highest ranked medical school in the country, up from 19th last year. Graduate programs in the biological sciences at the University of Chicago also climbed up one, from 20th to 19th, and two graduate programs were ranked in the top five: Paleontology at number 1 and Ecology & Evolution at 4.

No other program in the state was ranked as highly as the Pritzker School of Medicine. Northwestern University's medical school tied with the University of North Carolina at 20th, and its graduate programs ranked 28th, tied with three other schools. The University of Illinois was tied with four other schools at 24th for bioscience education programs.

While the recently published medical school and biological sciences graduate programs rankings clearly focus on the research aspect of our Division, these rankings, coupled with the high rankings the University of Chicago Hospitals received in July 2005, demonstrate the excellence of both our clinical and research faculty, two aspects of the Division that work in concert to train physicians and researchers.

Ultimately, this year's rise in the rankings was largely propelled by dramatic increases in the quality of incoming students, as measured by grade point averages and MCAT scores.

Additionally, a fundamental force behind the improvements in the rankings has been the outstanding leadership of Holly Humphrey, MD, Dean for Medical Education, Herb Abelson, MD, Associate Dean for Admissions & Financial Aid, and Halina Brukner, MD, Associate Dean for Medical School Education. In their efforts to further enhance the medical school's national image, they have embarked on a process to revise the current medical school curriculum to reflect the most recent advances in medical research and clinical methods and have established the Teaching Academy to recognize the contributions of the Division's outstanding faculty members.
